Foundation Talk: Oily Skin

Recently I had a friend come to me and ask what my favorite foundation and concealer was. She told me how she has oily skin and she was tired of spending money on products that she felt just "slide off" her face. She wanted something that would be full coverage to hide redness and that would keep oil from pouring out. Your welcome for that visual!!

I immediately jumped onto my computer and pulled up my "foundation" folder that I have. Whenever I try out a new product and do my research on all formulations and claims, I like to write them down so I can always go back as a reference point. As a Makeup Artist I think this is one of the best things you can do because you never know what questions you'll be asked or what client will be in your chair.

I rarely talk about oily and/or combination skin here on M & M because I have dry skin. So today I thought I'd share my knowledge on great foundations/concealers that I've used on clients with Oily Skin. Xo, Enjoy!

5 Tricks for Oily-Skin Application:

  1. Always Primer your Skin first.  Focus on T-zone: forehead, nose, chin, cheeks
  2. Don't over-do powdering. Yes, it's important to set your foundation but cake face isn't cute.
  3. Carry Blotting Papers. They really do work wonders to rid of oil peeping through.
  4. Go Oil Free. A problem I see so often is not checking the formulation. Always look for the "Oil-Free" stamp of approval.
  5. Look for Long Wearing. Long wearing foundations often have a high formulation that keeps the foundation in place all day long. Look for that because it helps tremendously.

3 Ways to Apply:

  1. Flat Foundation Brush
  2. Sponge
  3. Buffer Brush

** I prefer the Morphe 439 because it really helps buff (press) the foundation into your skin and adds to the longevity of your makeup.

Rule of Thumb with Makeup: Less is More - even with a full coverage foundation + powder. It's always smart to BUILD your desired coverage than start off with a big layer.

Little Reminder: Always start with a clean face + clean hands. Touching your face will ALWAYS transfer oil, bacteria, and unwanted junk. So try to always keep your hands clean. (I always have hand sanitizer on me.)

Lastly: Don't get frustrated. It's all about trial and error + learning as you go. Your skin is forever changing so what works one day doesn't always work the next. So take your time and don't get frustrated. And don't be afraid to ask for help when you're at the store purchasing your makeup.
